I have been facing some issues to get a true 5.1 sound from BF3 and finally found the solution so here it is. First, you need to make sure you have the following equipment (for PC, not AV receiver): 1) Sound card with SPDIF output (square one) and support of Dolby Digital encoder and decoder 2) 5.1 speakers set 3) SPDIF optical cable (square-square) As far as I am concerned, my setup is: Logitech z-5500 + Sound Blaster X-Fi Titanium Fatality Champion series (the one with the controler for front bay). Then, after of course isntalling all drivers and sound card plugged, you need to do three settings at three different locations: 1) on the sound card control panel software (for example on creative labs it is called creative console launcher. @sajberno1: dunno about your sound card but here are some tips.
1) have you downloaded the video in my post and tried it? 2) if you can ear properly all 5 channels, then it should be easy to solve 3) if not, this might mean your motherboard might support DD5.1 but not decode it.

Run the test above and let me know @bee144 When you say it does not play DD, do you mean you hear sound or can not hear sound at all? For me I realized that If I can not hear any sound in the game then it was a sound card setup issue, if i could hear sound but not 5.1 then it was BF3 issue Let me know @Medvad - just to double check, I guess you properly selected Home Cinema and turn off the Stereo enhancement right? Leave a reply. Dolby Digital is the name for audio compression technologies developed by Dolby Laboratories. Originally named Dolby Stereo Digital until 1994, except for Dolby TrueHD, the audio compression is lossy. The first use of Dolby Digital was to provide digital sound in cinemas from 35mm film prints; today, it is now also used for other applications such as TV broadcast, radio broadcast via satellite, digital. Apr 29, 2009 - I came across this information from Creative and thought this was something everyone had with a X-Fi sound card. They want a few.

Sorry for being late on reply, still have not found on how to subscribe to the thread here.:=( anyone let me know. Anyway: My assumptions is that while playing the game, the onboard SPDIF does not decode properly the game sound. That might explain why some of you experience dolby digital sound through the test movie and not in game.
I strongly suggest to invest in a on dedicated sound card. Not sure if anyone managed to get it work with onboard sound card only. @bee144 I would try to disabled the DTS encoder from the card. Maybe it creates confusion within the game as it tries to only send Dolby digital sound. Then definitively getting sound card should help but be careful. Just make sure the sound card not only have the SPDIF output (square, not the 3.5 jack) as it seems some card do say SPDIF with 3.5 but do not provide the converter, decoder.
@sajberno, can you try with a dedicated sound card? I really don't trust onboard sound to be honest.:=( Seems you face same issue as bee144.
@medvad: Thanks! Appreciate.:=) Now I need your help in games lol.have added you as friend. One more thing. There has been lost of confusion on the term Dolby Digital and PC manufacturers, AV manufacturers and video game industry are making it confusing.
1) DOLBY DIGITAL DOES NOT MEAN 5.1 Dolby Digital is just the Dolby certification. It supports Dolby 2.0, Dolby 5.1, Dolby 7.1 and other formats like Dolby Digital ES, EX. So if you really want to have a true Dolby Digital 5.1 you need to make sure that both the sound card, the game and the system supports the 5.1, not only 2.0 2) Dolby Digital needs encoder and decoder Most of the time, manufacturers add the logo, it just means it SUPPORTS it (this is the trick), it does not mean it decodes it!.:=) All of us have been fooled at least once because we all assume that when you see the logo it both supports and decodes it. This is usually the case for DVD-Blue Ray players and AV system, unfortunately, not for PC.yet.:=) Good luck.
